Women and community members perform  lamentation rituals at a contested site in Cape Town, South Africa, where there has been historical violence against women and indigenous lands. Our project explores the intimate correlation between the degradation of the natural world and interdependent ecologies, and the exploitation, domination and violence against women. Global retail giant Amazon is building its $284 million African headquarters on contested indigenous land in Cape Town. Amazon's development is considered a sacrilege, a violent recolonization of place and people in the interest of global corporate capital. We will through our lament remember the past by bringing it into the present, where we can challenge the violence to create a more equitable future.

Why

South Africa has some of the highest rates of rape and sexualised violence against women in the world. The result is a society where women’s bodies, in particular, are constantly under threat of being violated. Amazon’s development is the epitome of exploitative and extractive dynamics. Dynamics that are patriarchal, hierarchical, mechanistic and industrial. These constructs continue to subjugate and justify the exploitation of natural resources and women.
